The use of a monochromatic style element in David Dixon‘s spring 2014 collection was striking. Every look that came down the Toronto Fashion Week runway was either black, white or a mixture of both. The complete opposite of boring and plain, the collection was full of life and captivating detail.

David Dixon remarked that the inspiration for the spring colour palette came from how kids see life differently; “a series of simple decisions, right vs. wrong, no vs. yes or like or not like … the collection is entirely in black and white, just like a child’s answer to a complicated question.”

His fabric decisions were based on materials that he used as a child dressing his Barbies. “Tissue paper turned into chiffon, doilies became delicately cut lace and silks, tin foil became sequins, and scribbling on paper to create pattern, became the print.” The looks kept me on the edge of my seat and left me with a longing to get closer to the garments. Lace, applique, laser cut-outs, fringe, feathers…they were all superb; however my favourite fabric of the entire collection was the scribble print.

David Dixon designed this collection for the women who buy his clothes; because they are “fearfully and wonderfully made”… psalms 139
