Have you ever received an invite to a party and the dress code was dressy-causal? Or have you ever been picking out your outfit, not knowing if you should dress more or less casual/dressy for the occasion?
If you have, I’m right there with you! I’m pretty sure almost every other girl on the planet has experienced this fashion dilemma in some way or another, at some point in their lives.
And the truth is, you probably will find yourself in this predicament time and time again.
My hope is that after reading today’s blog post, you won’t have to call it a dilemma or a predicament again, because I am sharing two tricks that make creating a dressy-casual look so easy! Say goodbye to tearing your closet apart in the future when this situation arises!
The dress I’m wearing in this look could be styled to look casual or dressy (think garden party or business, not cocktail), but it’s how you accessorize it that makes all the difference.
For example, I often wear this dress with sandals for a more causal feel; however when I pair it with classic pumps (like I did in this outfit) the look is instantly elevated for a more dressy feel. Just like that, you have mastered trick number 1. So simple, right? Classic pumps = a more dressy look.
Trick number 2 has to do with the denim jacket – it’s the secret to giving this look it’s casual status. If the occasion is more formal in nature, then the denim jacket would not be acceptable. On the flip side, if the occasion asks for somewhat casual attire, the denim jacket is your perfect style weapon to make that happen. Denim is usually viewed as pretty casual – even when it costs hundreds of dollars like some designer jeans (my denim jacket is under $30!).
That’s it, a super simple and straight forward way for you to create a dressy-casual look with basically no effort.
Try it out! Next time you want, or need, to wear a dressy-casual outfit, try throwing on dress with a pair of pumps with a denim jacket! Let me know how it goes!
How do you like to dress up or dress down, a look? I’d love to hear from you in the comment section at the end of this post!

Victoria
SHOP MY LOOK
What I’m Wearing
- Dress: Cynthia Rowley via Winners (sold out) Here’s a similar loose fitting dress in the same fabric. See the bottom of this post for other cute fit and flare shirt dresses, plus more dresses I love by Cynthia Rowley.
- Denim Jacket: Old Navy – I also have this jacket in a darker blue and white.
- Handbag: Mackage, mine is sold out but the white Zed Mini by Mackage is also really cute! If you’re looking for my exact bag in other colours; the black is so classic, the red is eye catching, the turquoise is fun, and the black with studs is edgy.
- Shoes: Nine West, similar but higher heel here (and luxe Manolo Blahnik’s here).
- Bracelet: Alex and Ani – I especially love the initial charm bangle; but there are so many great options. A bunch of them stacked together would look look cool.
- Leaf Ring: Pandora
- Silver Band Ring: I made it in a workshop at The Den.
- Sunglasses: old, similar here (luxe) and here (affordable), plus I’m in love with these.
