Outfit // How To Dress For Rain And Still Look Stylish

Fashion, Rainwear, Trench Coat, Rainboots, Spring Style

One of the biggest style dilemmas I face, and I’m sure a lot of you do also, is how to dress for rain and still look stylish.

Have you found yourself looking at the weather forecast, seeing that it might possibly rain, and then stressing out about what you’re going to wear?

Or what about those times you throw on your big tall rain boots, a rain jacket that doesn’t ‘breathe’ very well, and carry a big umbrella around with you, all day – just because you heard it was going to rain?! But then, it never actually ended up raining! You then found yourself completely frustrated because even though you were prepared for the rain, you spent the day being really uncomfortable and not looking the least bit stylish – and the worst part was that it was all for nothing?!

I’ve been there. Oh, trust me, I’ve been there. More times than I can count! If you struggle with this style dilemma also, I hear you! Luckily, I’ve come up with the perfect stylish rain outfit for you; and for myself!

It all comes down to FOUR items:

  1. A Waterproof Trench Coat
  2. Lightweight Rain Boots or Shoes
  3. A Small Umbrella
  4. A Large Handbag

I discuss each of the four items in more depth below, so make sure you keep reading; but also click over here to see more stylish fashion that’s rain-perfect!

1. A Waterproof Trench Coat.

I had been coveting a Burberry trench coat for long time, and at some point last year, (I think – time flies, you know?!) I finally bit the bullet and bought myself one; and there hasn’t been a day that’s gone by that I regret it! It’s a classic wardrobe staple that I will have forever and will never go out of style.

Did you know that Burberry trench coats are completely waterproof!? Not water resistant – waterproof! It makes sense since London is a rainy place, but it’s a little fact I was surprised to hear. Also, their employees, in London, actually poor buckets of water on them in their training (or so I was told by the lady in the store).

Of course, If you’re not ready to splurge on a Burberry trench coat at the moment, any other trench coat is the perfect piece for a stylish rain outfit – just make sure the one you pick is waterproof (water resistant at minimum).  I’m totally in love with this soft pink trench coat right now (only $135 CAD).

2. Lightweight Rain Boots or Shoes.

Like I said up above, the last thing you want is to wear really big rain boots around all day when it never actually ends up raining! Unless you know for sure it’s going to rain, or it’s raining already when you leave the house, opt to leave your knee high rain boots at home. There are a lot of really stylish rain shoes and ankle boots out there that will blend into your outfit perfectly. These ones even have a heel, and these boots are lace-ups!

I recently fell in love with my new cougar boots for that exact reason! I feel stylish wearing them because, although they’re patent, they just look like regular ankle boots.

Imagine how my outfit would look if the patent boots were up to my knees. Sure, my outfit would look great if it was raining, but it would look a little silly on the days it doesn’t end up raining; or for the hours in between, before and after the rain.

3. A Small Umbrella.

I’m all for large umbrellas! I’ve actually come to prefer them over the years – especially the ones that curve over your head like a dome, because they’re really good at keeping the rain off. That being said, on the days you want to be a little more discreet with your rain outfit, I recommend a smaller umbrella – one that can fit into your handbag. That way, when you’re not using it, you can tuck it away out of sight.

I’m totally crushing on this larger ‘Rain Check?’ umbrella, and this smaller ‘Sunny Side Up’ umbrella.

4. A Large Handbag.

A larger handbag is important for hiding your small umbrella when you’re not actually using it. There have been many times I’ve worn a smaller cross body bag while I carrying an umbrella, and in hindsight I usually found myself regretting it. Being able to put your umbrella in your bag will free up your hands and make your day a little more simple.
